JOE LAZ: Comments: JOE LAZARUS - Last.fm Tumblr Weekly Top Artists

  • SuckMySocks · 1 year ago
    Very nice!
I've done a similiar pipe months ago. (http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.edit?_id=SIb_...)
The thing I've just improved from what I've seen in your pipe was the pubDate.
Can you tell me why utime have to be overwritten with a constant number?
  • Joe Lazarus · 1 year ago
Hey SuckMySocks, your Pipe looks nice. I'm thinking about adding the play count like you have. I wish I knew Regex... seems like that function would save me a lot of time.

Tumblr requires a pubDate. If you submit a feed to them without one, you get an error. However, the pubDate doesn't seem to be used for anything. They assign each feed item their own pubDate when it is posted to Tumblr. So, I just used a constant to get around the error message I was getting from Tumblr before I added that. It probably would have been more accurate for me to use the date field from Last.fm, but since it's not used for anything I just skipped that part and used a fixed value.
  • bijan · 1 year ago
This looks very cool. I just added it to my tumblelog.
  • bijan · 1 year ago
I can't get it to show up on my tumblelog actually. i created the feed and added it to my tumblr feed but it doens' tshow up?
  • Joe Lazarus · 1 year ago
Thanks for the heads up Bijan. I noticed a few people had problems and I think I've identified the bug. I see that your top 5 artists from this week are on your Tumblr now. Out of curiosity, did you delete my feed and then re-submit it to your feeds settings? That info would help confirm my suspicion about the bug and help me fix it for other users.
  • bijan · 1 year ago
No. It just started to work. There was just a delay that's all.

    Great stuff Joe.
  • Joe Lazarus · 1 year ago
Lesson learned... when faced with a perplexing bug, just wait. It will magically fix itself. Glad you like the feed.
  • daryn · 1 year ago
    very nice joe, thanks!
  • ubergooroo · 1 year ago
This is awesome and something I have been looking for. thanks.
  • travors · 1 year ago
tumblr just keeps telling me it's not a valid feed :(
  • Joe Lazarus · 1 year ago
Travors, I'm assuming you use that same user name "travors" on Last.fm. I was just able to add your feed to a test account I have on Tumblr, so I'm not sure why you're seeing an error. Were you adding this URL...

    http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.run?_id=b0d26...

    I hope that helps.
  • travors · 1 year ago
Hey yes that's it. I imported it into google reader ok.
Hang on lemme check tumblr again.

Yup. It's working now. I'm nuts it seems.
    Thanks!
  • SuckMySocks · 1 year ago
Perhaps you can promote these ones:

Those are both good. Nice work.
  • chrisherbert · 1 year ago
Joe, this is great. Saw Fred's post on Tumblr song circles and your name didn't ring a bell but I follow Bijan and when he posted this Last.fm tool, knew I had to drop a thanks comment.
  • Joe Lazarus · 1 year ago
Thanks Chris. I sent you a FriendFeed invite per your other comment.
  • Chris · 1 year ago
    Joe - This is fantastic.

    Thank you for sharing.

  • Thomas · 1 year ago
Hi there, thanks for this app. Im having a few problems however, Im getting a post a day at least! Apologies if its something i've done wrong. I have reloaded the feed.
  • Joe Lazarus · 1 year ago
Hi Thomas. I looked at your feed based on the posts I saw on your Tumblr under Last.fm user name "completesound". The problem seems to be on Last.fm's side. For some reason, Last.fm is generating a feed each day for your user name instead of each week. It's odd. There's no data appearing on your page...

    http://www.last.fm/user/completesound/charts/

Yet, there is a feed for you that's updated daily instead of weekly...

    http://ws.audioscrobbler.com/1.0/user/completes...

Did you just join Last.fm this week? If so, try waiting a week and Last.fm should have time to collect your first weekly data correctly.
  • thomas · 1 year ago
Thanks for looking Joe. Yes I joined this week, so that might explain it. I'll try again in a week or so!
  • engtech · 1 year ago

  • G. R. Lucas · 1 year ago
    Nicely done. Thanks.
  • Aaron J. · 1 year ago
    Brilliant! Thanks for sharing.
  • jngd · 1 year ago
hey joe. sorry to be a pain but i added the feed last week and it seems to work in terms of bringing up the post within my tumblr but doesn't actually show any artists. any guidance? sorry if this is a very stupid question.
  • Joe Lazarus · 1 year ago
jngd, when you add the feed to your tumblr, you need to import it as "links with summaries". to fix the problem, delete the current feed and add it again with that setting. that should fix it.
  • jngd · 1 year ago
thanks joe. would have helped if i'd read your instructions properly. sorry for the hassle. jez
  • Mark Collier · 1 year ago
Great stuff, Joe. I created a dedicated tumblog as you suggested at colliermusic.tumblr.com

    Mark Collier
  • Ben · 1 year ago
This is great. I'm pulling it into my tumblr now, http://minorjive.net.

I am having a small issue with the code that the pipe spits out into my tumblr post. Would it be possible to have the pipe generate code that does not stick p tags around the ordered list of songs? If that were possible and the "Imported from Last.fm Tumblr" line could then go inside its own p tags, I think the pipe's output would be friendlier to the css on my (and probably others' ) site(s).

If you take this post as an example, you will see that there is no vertical space between "Imported from ..." and the dividing line directly below it. I'm pretty sure this is because the CSS doesn't "see" the p tags that surround the ordered list and the "Imported from" attribution.
  • Joe Lazarus · 1 year ago
Minorjive, I'm happy to change it or create a new version. I don't really know HTML or CSS. I just found a page on the web that gave instructions on how to form the HTML for a numbered list. I'm ok with changing it if the output can be improved, but can you give me an example of the exact code you had in mind? Otherwise, I'm not sure if I can figure it out on my own.
  • Ben · 1 year ago
I'm going to email you. I could not display the code properly in the comments area.
  • axelrod · 1 year ago
    Great tool!
  • joshjenkins · 1 year ago
It says it's not a valid feed. (http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.run?_id=b0d26...)

Is it that I haven't listened to any artists yet?
  • Joe Lazarus · 1 year ago
Josh14, the feed shows your top 5 artists from last week. Since you didn't listen to any music via Last.fm last week, there are no results for you yet.
  • pacomexico · 1 year ago
    Great... thank yoy very much
  • empirikal · 1 year ago
You should totally make one similar for flickr, I hate uploading 100 photos and all 100 getting posted...
  • Joe Lazarus · 1 year ago
Good idea. Maybe I'll do that. Would you want one summary post for Flickr per week or one per day?
  • empirikal · 1 year ago
I'm not familiar with how you're setting it up but an ideal situation would just be on a per update basis. Like say I upload 10 photos today, it would check for recent updates and see I uploaded 10. It would pick 1 of the 10 images, first or last uploaded, and will pull that image to the tumblr page, with a note that says "View all recently posted Pictures" or "Click to view the 10 recently updated photos"

If that's not totally possible, then something weekly or daily would be great too.
  • Pema · 1 year ago
Hi! I'm not sure if you would be willing to take on the project...but it would be great if you could figure out how to put the goals from the Nike+ website on to Tumblr. They give you the HTML like this:

    <object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=8,0,0,0" width="198" height="145" id="Nike+ Runs" align="middle"><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="sameDomain" /><param name="wmode" value="transparent" /><param name="movie" value="http://nikeplus.nike.com/nikeplus/v1/swf/scrapablewidget/goal.swf" /><param name="quality" value="high" /><param name="bgcolor" value="#ffffff" /><param name="FlashVars" value="type=individualGoal&userDefaultUnit=mi&screenName=Pema&dateFormat=DD/MM/YY&id=1625707181&userID=1021656398®ion=emea&language=en&locale=en_gb"/><embed src="http://nikeplus.nike.com/nikeplus/v1/swf/scrapablewidget/goal.swf" quality="high" wmode="transparent" bgcolor="#ffffff" width="198" height="145" name="Nike+ Runs" align="middle" allowScriptAccess="sameDomain" FlashVars="type=individualGoal&userDefaultUnit=mi&screenName=Pema&dateFormat=DD/MM/YY&id=1625707181&userID=1021656398®ion=emea&language=en&locale=en_gb" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer"></embed></object>

(I'm sure it will actually show up...sorry I'm completely not tech savvy)
How do you get this on to Tumblr?
  • Joe Lazarus · 1 year ago
Pema, I don't use Nike+ so I'm not that familiar with it, but it looks like you could post that code to Tumblr yourself. Just treat it as a video post. Click the video icon from your Tumblr dashboard and paste your code above into the "embed a video" field. It should appear on your Tumblr as a widget. Tumblr calls it a "video" post, but it supports any sort of embeded flash widget, which is what Nike+ provides. Hope that helps.
  • pweitzman · 1 year ago
Nice. I just added this to my tumblog. LastFM is great.

If you are interested, I built a tool for lastfm twitter integration. Basically if you love a track on lastfm it tweets it. I am testing it now. Tweet me at @pootytang if you are interested.
  • mgerlach · 1 year ago
    That's cool, man. Thanks!
  • oBifferson · 1 year ago
Huh! This is super, but I keep getting the not a valid feed error as well. I believe I have the right url: http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.run?_id\x3db0... (for username obifferson). I feel like I had this working once, but not today! Very cool pipe though. I really wish I could find something that outputs most recently listened to track (not as a post, just as a little script).
  • Joe Lazarus · 1 year ago
    obifferson, use this url...

    http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.run?_id=b0d26...

for your recently listened to tracks, why not just use last.fm's widgets?...

    http://www.last.fm/widgets/
  • oBifferson · 1 year ago
    OH SNAP! That totally worked!
    Thanks a ton, very exciting.
That's right I guess I could use their widgets, though not sure if they have
one that just spits out one artist song combo. Will have to check. Hope all
    rocks for you!

    great ! :) thk's.
  • deepblue · 1 year ago
Hi Joe! Can you help me? I'm looking for a pipe which i could use to create a weekly summary of my own tumblr. Something like... "Summary this week... " and all the links of the week in one post, no pictures or videos, just links. I don't know if I explained myself.

Anyway, do you have idea where can i find that?

Thanks in advance and congratulations for your tumblr and the last.fm pipe which i've included in mine. deepblue.tumblr.com

    greetings from spain.
  • Joe Lazarus · 1 year ago
I don't know of a Pipe that does that, but someone who knows Pipes & Tumblr could probably build it for you.
  • Joe Dawson · 1 year ago
Just came across this from Fred Wilson's Tumblr page and have added this to my Tumblr blog. Nice work Joe!! I have been looking for a way to get thisinformation out there and you have provided the perfect solution!
  • Joe Lazarus · 1 year ago
    Glad you like it.
  • NetworkShadow · 1 year ago
Great use of Last.fm and Yahoo Pipes. I'm using it on my Tumblr. Thanks for sharing.
  • Joe Lazarus · 1 year ago
    Thanks for checking it out.
  • sam_uel · 1 year ago
Just leaving a comment to thank you for this brilliantly useful tool!
  • Joe Lazarus · 1 year ago
Thanks for the brilliantly kind comment!
  • Schwegler · 1 year ago
Alright, I've seen this on various tumblogs and have tried twice (on different weeks) to add it to my Tubmlr account. The RSS feed is comes up with for my account (schwegler) comes out empty and can't be added. Any apparent reason you can think of that it wouldn't work?

    Thanks,
    Andrew
  • Joe Lazarus · 1 year ago
Hi Andrew, the feed shows your top 5 artists from the prior week. It's based on the information on this page from Last.fm...

    http://www.last.fm/user/schwegler/charts/

As you can see, you only listened to 2 artists last week. When I made the feed, I decided that if a person listened to less than 5 artists for the week, that I would skip the update that week (ie. does a top 5 list make sense when you only listened to 2 artists). In order for the feed to update for you next week, make sure you listen to more than 5 artists this week.
  • ella · 1 year ago
cant get this to work..keep getting not a vaild feed thing. any ideas why? i am using this
    http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.run?_id=b0d26...
  • Joe Lazarus · 1 year ago
Ella, you're getting no results because you only listened to one artist on Last.fm last week. The Pipe is based on data from this page...

    http://www.last.fm/user/uriela/charts/

Since the idea is to show your top 5 artists, it's designed to only show results for a given week if you listen to at least 5 bands the prior week.
  • Big Dan · 1 year ago
Sensational! I've added it to my Tumblr blog! Thanks and well done!
  • jeffala · 1 year ago
I've been using this for a few weeks, but this week it didn't work. I ran the pipe with your username and it returned no data. My username (jeffala) also returned no data. It doesn't work for my friends' names, either.

I visited Last.fm and noticed that they'd drastically changed their website, did they play with the API while they were at it?
  • Joe Lazarus · 1 year ago
Yeah, it's not working for anyone this week. I need to look into it. Last.fm might have made some changes to their API... or they might just be late posting this week's updates. I hope to have it fixed by next week. Stay tuned!
  • RyanSelvy · 1 year ago
Thank you very very much! I'm using it :)
  • Dan Kantor · 1 year ago
    This is awesome! Thanks Joe
  • Joe Lazarus · 1 year ago
Glad you like it. Rock on.
  • mars · 1 year ago
    Thank you! I'm lovin' it~
  • oosker · 1 year ago
Did something change again? It didn't work this week.
  • Joe Lazarus · 1 year ago
The feed from my tool is waiting to be imported, but Tumblr didn't process
any of them this week. I'm not sure why that it. Unfortunately, it's out
of my control. I'll email Tumblr and see if they have any thoughts on it.
  • francisco · 1 year ago
    Hey man
I'm sorry to bother you, but I get 'No pipe results for Last.fm Tumblr." when I run the pipe.
Do I have to do something on the last.fm end for it to work??? My username is fdelacruz.

Thanks in advance and great work.

    f
  • Joe Lazarus · 1 year ago
The Pipe shows your top 5 artists from the prior week. In order for it to
work, you had to listen to at least 5 bands last week. The data comes from
    this page on Last.fm...

    http://www.last.fm/user/fdelacruz/charts?chartt...

It doesn't look like you listened to any music on Last.fm last week. If you
listen to 5 bands this week and run it again next week, you should be all
    set.
  • francisco · 1 year ago
Ok, what happened is that I'm using pandorajam to listen to my pandora stations. It has a feature to "audioscrobble' or summit information about the music I have been listening in pandora to lastfm. So i'm not actually listening to it at lastfm though I'm compiling a library from the one I listen in pandora. I guess having a library doesnt count if you're listening to it.
  • Joe Lazarus · 1 year ago
It should work if you're scrobbling the music from Pandora to Last.fm. It
looks like you just started doing that a few days ago.
  • francisco · 1 year ago
I did, just start. Thanks, immensely for such great job and pacience in answering my question. :)
  • gregs · 1 year ago
can get 80% of the way there..pipe runs, produces list (only 2 artists though), then Get RSS takes me to google page that asks if I wanna put the list onto my google home page - and that works too. But the url I pasted into tumblr never works...any suggestions appreciated...have an hour or so invested in this ! :)
  • Joe Lazarus · 1 year ago
What is your Last.fm user name?
  • kissmeimfamous · 1 year ago
Something weird going on when I try to use the pipe:

"No pipe results for Last.fm Tumblr."

This is particularly weird as I always use Last.fm and when I visit my profile, I do see activity although the pipe is not catching it. I tried to seek for a solution in my Last.fm settings but all seems to be set well. Any ideas?

    My Last.fm username = saikoindustries

    Thank you
  • Joe Lazarus · 1 year ago
The Pipe is based on the data from this page:

    http://www.last.fm/user/saikoindustries/charts?...

As you can see, you only listened to 3 bands last week through Last.fm. The
Top 5 list will only work if you listened to 5 or more artists the prior
week. Try it again next week.
  • Delish23 · 1 year ago
Whenever I try to enter the RSS url as 'links with summaries' it says that it isn't a valid feed. What am I doing wrong?
  • Joe Lazarus · 1 year ago
What is the RSS url that you're using?
  • delish23 · 1 year ago
  • Joe Lazarus · 1 year ago
I'm not sure how you got that URL, but it has a bunch of bad characters in
    it. Try this instead...

    http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.run?_id=b0d26...
  • Delish23 · 1 year ago
    You are amazing. Thank you!
  • kissmeimfamous · 1 year ago
    Hey Joelaz,

This week it should work out for me, at least that is what i thought. But when i imported the RSS feed it says "Not a valid feed."

    http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.run?_id=b0d26...

Pretty weird, isn't it? Thanks for your reply
  • Joe Lazarus · 1 year ago
That link you sent works fine for me. I had no problem adding it to a test
Tumblr account I have. If you can't import it, you might want to contact
    Tumblr.
  • vertigo25 · 1 year ago
I'm getting the "Invalid Feed" error from Tumblr as well :(

    http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.run?_id=b0d26...
  • Joe Lazarus · 1 year ago
vertigo25, you only listened to one band on last.fm last week...

    http://www.last.fm/user/vertigo25/charts?chartt...

you have to listen to 5 or more bands the prior week in order for the top 5
    list to work.
  • vertigo25 · 1 year ago
Ah. I'll try again next week, then. :)
  • Keft · 1 year ago
    Thanks, I'll add this instantly.
  • BreannaJai · 1 year ago
This is awesome. I'm definitely adding it. Thanks.
  • Uaba · 1 year ago
    Loved it!
    It's added :)
  • drudolph · 1 year ago
    Hey Joe,
I have entered in my username (drudolph) several times and nothing comes up. Can you help?

    Thanks.
  • Joe Lazarus · 1 year ago
drudolph, you only listened to 3 bands last week on last.fm...

    http://www.last.fm/user/drudolph/charts?chartty...

listen to 5 or more bands this week and the feed will work for you next
    week.
  • Cait · 1 year ago
This doesn't work for me. :( When I click "run pipe" it says there was nothing found, and then if I continue on to the RSS, it still doesn't come up with anything. If I try posting the URL in the links with summaries, it tells me it's invalid.
  • Joe Lazarus · 1 year ago
Cait, that usually happens when you listen to fewer than 5 artists the prior
week. Did you listen to more than 5 bands on Last.fm last week? What is
    your Last.fm user name?
  • Cait · 1 year ago
My lastfm says I listened to 20 artists this past week. Hm. My last.fm name is caitbodine. Thanks!
  • Joe Lazarus · 1 year ago
Cait, your feed works fine as far as I can tell...

    http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.run?_id=b0d26...

I see your top 5 bands listed in that RSS feed.
  • Cait · 1 year ago
    That link works! Thanks! :)
  • Ivan · 1 year ago
    This is sweet, thanks!
  • Sean · 1 year ago
Thanks a lot for this little tool. But it's not working for me either....looking through the comments I can't see why. It says it's not a valid feed or something. I was using this URL:

    http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.run?_id\x3db0...

If you can help me out, I'd really appreciate it!
  • Joe Lazarus · 1 year ago
Sean, I'm not sure how you arrived at that URL. The correct feed for your
    Last.fm name is:

    http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.run?_id=b0d26...
  • Sean · 1 year ago
It was just the URL the program spat out at me. This one seems to have agreed with Tumblr. Thanks so much for the help and the program.
  • Debbie · 1 year ago
Love the idea of this but I had no luck for me either - I get the error message "No pipe results for Last.fm Tumblr." when I click 'Run Pipe'. Any idea?
    Thanks!
Debbie (debbiemet on last.fm and tumblr)
  • Joe Lazarus · 1 year ago
Debbie, I'm not sure why you're getting an error. If you go to this page
and click on the RSS button...

    http://pipes.yahoo.com/joelaz/lastfm_tumblr?las...

You should get this RSS feed, which works fine as far as I can tell...

    http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.run?_id=b0d26...

Plug that feed into Tumblr and you should be good to go.
  • Debbie · 1 year ago
Thanks for that - it worked fine this time, but when I put the feed into the "links" form only the url showed up so I may have screwed up. Where exactly do I put the feed url?
    Thanks!
  • Joe Lazarus · 1 year ago
Copy the feed URL, login to Tumblr, click the "customize" link, click
"feeds", choose "rss feed" as "links with summaries" and paste the feed URL
    into that form.
  • Debbie · 1 year ago
Fantastic, thank you. Sorry for the numptiness – that was (obviously) my first Tumblr feed.
    Thanks again!
    Debbie

That's so cool - thanks for building and sharing!!
  • Nanashambles · 1 year ago
I wonder if instead of artis, can you make it 5 weekly tracks?
    is possible...
    thx
  • Joe Lazarus · 1 year ago
That's certainly possible. If you know Yahoo! Pipes, you could easily
modify what I built to create a top 5 tracks feed. I just don't find it as
useful or interesting since there aren't many tracks that I listen to
    multiple times in a week.
  • calamityjane · 1 year ago
Oh great! I will give this a try! Thanks
  • gregs · 1 year ago
joe, does it have to be 5 artists played in last fm, or can it be in itunes and then scrobbled to lastfm?
  • Joe Lazarus · 1 year ago
Greg, it's anything that's scrobbled. I rarely listen to music on
Last.fm... my list is usually a mix of iTunes and the Hype Machine, which
    both scrobble to Last.fm.
  • jinners · 1 year ago
what about when you get "no results" after putting in your user name?
  • Joe Lazarus · 1 year ago
That usually means that you didn't listen to 5 or more bands through Last.fm
    last week.
  • thePeej · 1 year ago
Something about the RSS feed isn't working. I'm taking the URL from the page the "Get as RSS" and putting it in the right place on Tumblr and it's saying it's not a valid RSS.

    Any ideas?
  • Joe Lazarus · 1 year ago
What's your Last.fm user name and what RSS URL are you using?
  • thePeej · 1 year ago
my user name is pjszabo and it wasn't giving me a legit URL when i was putting it into the pipe.
This is what it gave me
    http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.run?_id=b0d26...

is that even what i was supposed to grab?

    Thanks so much
  • Joe Lazarus · 1 year ago
That's the correct URL. The problem is that you didn't listen to any music
through Last.fm last week as you can see here...

    http://www.last.fm/user/pjszabo/charts?charttyp...

If you wait till next week, the RSS feed should work since you listened to
    music this week.
  • thePeej · 1 year ago
That would help. Thanks so much man. btw is there a place where i can get that modest mouse cover you just posted? it's sweet.

It's not working for anyone right now do to a problem in Yahoo! Pipes and a
data delay from Last.fm. Wait a day or two and try again. There isn't
anything I can do to fix it since the problem is on their end, but I'm sure
    they'll fix it soon.
  • Joe Lazarus · 1 year ago
I created a copy of the Pipe, which seems to have fixed the problem. Try this...

But I did listen to artists last week so I'm confused

this is the url it gives me

Aleisha, there was a problem in Yahoo! Pipes. I created a copy of the Pipe, which seems to have fixed the issue. Try this link...

  • aleisha · 1 year ago
hm I get the same message.

That's alright I suppose my tumblr just hates me, haha
  • Joe Lazarus · 1 year ago
That's odd. I was just able to add your feed to a test Tumblr account. Just in case, this is the RSS feed that you want to import into Tumblr...

    http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.run?_id=5ae8a...

If that doesn't work, I'm not sure how to help.
  • aleisha · 1 year ago
oh it worked now, thank you very much :]
  • joyce · 1 year ago
I've actually been getting the same problem too. I definitely have been listening to music.
I can't figure out if it's my Last.fm or my Tumblr that is the root of the problem.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

joyce, you only listened to 2 bands last week...

you need to listen to 5 or more the prior week in order for this to work.

  • Joe Lazarus · 1 year ago
Yep, I added play counts earlier this week. Glad you like them!
  • thekatybee · 1 year ago
I'm having trouble with the "invalid feed" I've tried about three times a few weeks apart. Here is what I'm entering. http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.run?_id\x3d5a...

I added it to my google reader so for now I've been copy and pasting that into my tumblr on Sundays, if I remember.
  • Joe Lazarus · 1 year ago
thekatybee, i'm not sure how you got that url, but it's a bad link. url's should never have forward slashes "\". the correct url for your last.fm feed is...

    http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.run?_id=5ae8a...

out of curiosity, where did you get the bad url and what browser are you using? several people ran into the same problem, i'm just not sure how you all are getting that weird url.
  • thekatybee · 1 year ago
I'm using the linux version of Firefox. When I click "Get RSS Feed" it takes me to Google and asks me whether how I want to subscribe to it. And it lists that link on the page so I right-clicked and copied the link. I couldn't find any other way to copy to it.
  • thekatybee · 1 year ago
Is there some other way you're supposed to do it? I was thinking I wanted to use one of your twitter feeds too but I had the same problem.
  • Joe Lazarus · 1 year ago
It sounds like the problem has to do with your browser settings. I don't use Linux, so I'm not sure how to fix it, but in the Mac version of Firefox, you can go to Preferences > Applications > Web Feed and change it from "Use Google" to "Preview in Firefox". That should let you view RSS feed URL's in their normal format instead of that version with the forward slashes. If that doesn't work for some reason or if the settings are different in Linux, I'm not sure I can help.

I'm not sure what your problem is, but if you're getting that error on
Tumblr, try contacting their support team.

everytime i type in my last.fm user name and click "run pipe," it says there are no pipe results. any idea why?
  • Joe Lazarus · 12 months ago
Most likely, that means you didn't listen to at least 5 artists
through Last.fm last week. If that's the case, try again next week.
  • chanc · 12 months ago
Awesome work Joe ! The strange thing though is the results from the pipe don't tally with http://www.last.fm/user/senhwei/charts ? Using the pipe, the top 5 artists are Gregorian (11) Tosca (9) Sarah Connor (8) Bryan Adams (7) Moby (7). But on Last.fm, my top 5 from last 7 days are Gregorian, Il Divo, Sarah Connor, Enya and Andy Lau (劉德華) ?

My Last.fm username is "senhwei". Any ideas why there's a difference ? Thanks again for this great work !
  • Joe Lazarus · 12 months ago
I'm not at my computer now, but I think you're comparing two different
reports. My pipe shows data from the "weekly snapshot" report, which
shows data from the prior Sunday to the most recent Sunday. I think
the report you're looking at on last.fm is a rolling 7 day report,
meaning Thursday to Thursday for today. There's another report that
you can find in last.fm that sync's perfectly with my pipe.
  • chanc · 12 months ago
Joe - you're absolutely right ! I just checked the weekly snapshot report and it tallies perfectly. Thanks for your prompt response, I'm going to give your feed a go on my new tumblr blog. Thanks and Merry Christmas !!

  • Joe Lazarus · 11 months ago
Were you able to import the rss feed into your Tumblr account? If
you're still having trouble, let me know your last.fm user name so I
    can look into the issue.
  • Justin · 11 months ago
How do I get to post on my tumblr? Does it post it automatically?
Or am I going to have to copy the source code from the feed?

Edit - Never mind it worked :D Thanks
  • Joe Lazarus · 11 months ago
You only need to import the rss feed per the instructions above.
  • brandon · 11 months ago

  • matt · 11 months ago
    this is nice, thanks.
  • Morgan · 11 months ago
This is great, Joe! I have one question. When I look at my Top 5 artists over the last week, why is that list different from what the "run pipe" shows me? There are 2 artists that got skipped in the results from "run pipe"... just wondering if there's a reason for that?
    Thanks!
    Last.fm user = roxy031
  • Joe Lazarus · 11 months ago
I'm not sure what you're looking at, but there are two weekly lists in Last.fm. One shows a weekly snapshot from Sunday to Sunday. Another shows a rolling 7 day list, meaning if you look at the report on say a Wednesday, it would show Wednesday to Wednesday. My Pipe is based on the snapshot, not the rolling report. You're probably noticing a discrepancy between the two different reports.

  • Joe Lazarus · 11 months ago
The problem is that you only listened to 1 artist through Last.fm last
    week...

    http://www.last.fm/user/Lachmuskel/charts?chart...

In order for the Top 5 feed to work, you need to have listened to 5 or more

  • Joe Lazarus · 11 months ago
Glad you like it. I don't use Pandora much, but I think there may be a
way to link that to your last.fm account so those songs are included
in your last.fm stats. Haven't tried it myself.

  • Joe Lazarus · 10 months ago
That usually means that you didn't listen to 5 or more bands through Last.fm
last week. If you did, let me know your Last.fm user name and I'll check it

Hi Joe, my Last.fm user name is samberesford (here's my chart: http://www.last.fm/user/samberesford/charts?cha...). Let me know if you need any other information from me. Thanks again....and really, thanks again; this is such a cool tool for you to share, and the fact that a complete stranger is taking a few minutes out of his day to help out amazes me.
  • Joe Lazarus · 10 months ago
No problem Sam. I see results in your feed...

    http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.run?_id=5ae8a...

Do you not see that list from your end? Try to paste that feed into the Tumblr feed import screen. It should work.

  • jsamlarose · 10 months ago
    Hey Joe,

I've looked through the thread above to see what the problem might be before posting this, but I can't figure out what the problem might be...

Last.fm says I've listened to 41 artists this week (http://www.last.fm/user/jacobslr/charts?chartty...)

    Last.fm user name: jacobslr

The pipe feed I was trying to import:
    http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.run?_id=5ae8a...

Tumblelog (just for sake of being complete!) http://jslr.tumblr.com

Thanks in advance for any advice, and apologies if it's an obvious one that I missed... ;)
  • Joe Lazarus · 10 months ago
Jacob, that feed URL looks fine to me...

    http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.run?_id=5ae8a...

You should be able to import than into Tumblr. Where exactly are you running into problems?
  • jsamlarose · 10 months ago
Totally weird. I was getting the "invalid feed" response that a lot of people had cited. Tried it a few times over the course of an hour or so before posting a cry for help. Just tried again, and it works without a hitch.

    Thanks, Joe... ;)

Kathryn, you haven't listened to 5 or more artists through Last.fm in any given week. For example, for the week ending today, you only listened to 13 songs all from the same band, Moneen...

    http://www.last.fm/user/kathylovesmusic/charts?...

In order for the Top 5 list to update, you need to listen to at least 5 bands that week.
  • Kathryn · 10 months ago

Correct, this week you have enough data for the Pipe to work. Are you not
    seeing the feed?

    http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.run?_id=5ae8a...

It looks fine to me this week.
  • Sam · 10 months ago
Hi Joe, back again. Feed works very nicely, but I notice on my friend's blog, it lists the Top 5 artists (and play counts): http://www.5oh7.com/post/74833762/my-top-5-arti... on mine, however, it's just a link to the actual chart: http://samberesford.tumblr.com/post/75141163/my.... Any suggestions?
  • Joe Lazarus · 10 months ago
When you import that feed into Tumblr, you need to select "links with

  • Joe Lazarus · 10 months ago
Lee, there was a problem with Yahoo! Pipes last night that was causing the "request failed" error. It should be fixed now, however, it looks like you didn't listen to 5 or more bands through Last.fm last week...

Tim, it sounds like a setting in your browser is breaking the URL. Try this
URL instead as the one you paste into Tumblr, but replace the last part of
the URL that says joelaz to your Last.fm user name...

    http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.run?_id=d29d5...

Hey Joe, I've been using your Pipe for a while and am a big fan. However is there a way to add a title to the Tumblr post (e.g. "This week's listening:") as i don't think some people actually know what's going on when all they see is a list of bands with numbers beside it.

    Cheers!
  • Joe Lazarus · 7 months ago
Luke, the PIpe is setup to include a title. I think you just missed a step when importing the feed into your Tumblr. When you add it to Tumblr make sure you select import as "links with summaries". If you do that, the feed appears like this...

    http://joelaz.com/post/100628401/my-top-5-artis...

  • Joe Lazarus · 7 months ago
If you tell me your Last.fm user name, I'll look into it.
  • Parker · 7 months ago
Thank you for this wonderful tool, I absolutely love it!

Would there be a way to just let it pull monthly or maybe bi-monthly charts? I do use Last.fm, but I still use my "real" stereo more, so I often fail at submitting weekly charts. Just wondering if the monthly thing can be done...
  • Joe Lazarus · 7 months ago
Yeah, that should be possible. Feel free to take the Yahoo! Pipe that I
created and modify it to run on a monthly basis instead of weekly. There's
a link next to every Pipe labeled "Edit Source". Click that and it creates
a copy of the Pipe that you can view and edit. It might take a little while
to learn Yahoo! Pipes, but it should be possible.

Joe, I just sat down and hand-copied your pipe module by module. From what I understand, the Last.fm only provides charts for 7 days, 3 months, 6 months and 12 months (well, and overall charts).

I have decided that I could live with 3 months, since that does make more sense for me than 7 days. I changed the references to weekly charts to that of monthly charts, which, if I'm not mistaken, uses the getTopArtists API.

Sadly, it does not appear to be working. I don't even know where I went wrong, all I ever get is the "No pipe results" error message. Even though I felt bad about it, I published my dysfunctional attempt, hoping the cap locks will deter people.

    http://pipes.yahoo.com/hellagood/LMAeupVv3hGMiP...

I'm not asking you specifically because I know you're a busy guy, I just thought I'd post this here any maybe I'm lucky and somehow has attempted and succeeded at doing this for any period of time > 7 days.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. :)
  • Joe Lazarus · 5 months ago
Parker, the problem with your Pipe is in the second module. You added a URL
variable called "period" and entered a value of "3month". That variable
isn't supported by the API call your using. It may be possible to create
the Pipe you're looking for, but it's probably a bit more complicated than
just copying my Pipe and making a few small changes.

Personally, I don't think the Pipe would be all that valuable anyway. If
you only want to update your list once every 3 months, it's probably easier
to post the list by hand. That said, it probably could be done if you or
someone else wants to take up the challenge of creating the Pipe.

    Good luck!

Hi! I'm new on tumblr, so I'm trying to spiff it up some. Last.fm Tumblr doesnt seem to be working for me. It comes up with this message when I enter in my username: "Pipes encountered a problem while running this pipe: The Pipes engine request failed (999)". Any suggestions? My username is sun_and_trees, if that helps.
  • Graham · 7 months ago
    Same here. username=hammerikaner
  • suntrees · 7 months ago
Oh, mine works now! Try yours again
  • Joe Lazarus · 7 months ago
Graham, the reason the Top 5 list didn't work for you this week is because
you only listened to 2 bands through Last.fm last week...

    http://www.last.fm/user/hammerikaner/charts?cha...

You need to listen to 5 or more. Try again next week.

    Hi!
This might sound stupid but when I go to get the RSS code, no URL comes up. :/
    What am I doing wrong?

    Cheers.

I'm not sure. If you tell me your Last.fm user name, I'll look into it.

Steph, this is the RSS feed URL to paste into your Tumblr...

  • dailyohdeer · 6 months ago
Hey! I've tried to do this [lastfm username diannecoopert] and it keeps saying not a valid feed? I'm using URL http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.run?_id=d29d5...... am I being incredibly stupid?! Wah!
  • Joe Lazarus · 6 months ago
  • dailyohdeer · 6 months ago
argh, still says it is not a valid feed?
  • Joe Lazarus · 6 months ago
Your feed works fine when I try it. I'm not sure what the issue is. Where are you seeing the "not a valid feed" error? In Yahoo! Pipes or on Tumblr? It may be an issue with your browser or on Tumblr's side. I'm stumped.
  • dailyohdeer · 6 months ago
It says Not valid Feed when I put it into the RSS feed part on Tumblr... its still doing it. Not life threatening but mildly annoying! I put in exactly the URL you listed... weird.
  • Joe Lazarus · 6 months ago
It's not working today for a different reason than last week. This past
week, you only listened to 4 bands through Last.fm...

    http://www.last.fm/user/diannecoopert/charts?ch...

You need 5 or more for the feed to work. Try waiting till next Monday,
listen to 5 or more bands by then, and then paste this alternative RSS feed
    into Tumblr...

    http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.run?_id=cfc13...

    That should work.
  • lisalovesmaude · 5 months ago
Ahh maybe thats my problem too. Well, Lastfm reports on Sunday, doesnt it? So do I have this week to build up a list? Hopefully. :)
  • Kaitlyn · 6 months ago
I am getting an error every time I try and run the pipe.
    My username is tinkeh
I know I have more than 5 artists. According to the charts I have 100 unique artists this week..
  • Joe Lazarus · 6 months ago
Kaitlyn, I'm not sure why you're getting an error. It worked fine when I
ran the Pipe for your name. Strange. Here's the RSS feed...

    http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.run?_id=d29d5...
  • nosnah227 · 6 months ago
I have listened to plenty of artists and I still get "Pipes encountered a problem while running this pipe: The Pipes engine request failed (999)" when I do it, too. My last.fm username is nosnah227.
  • Joe Lazarus · 6 months ago
I'm not sure why it wasn't working for you, but it seems to be ok now.

Tumblr is saying that it's not a valid feed. I've listened to plenty of artists this week so I don't understand the problem. Help please?
  • jemstarr · 6 months ago
I forgot to say that my username is __glitterati
  • lisalovesmaude · 5 months ago
I'm confused, and I'd love to try this but Tumblr says the feed is invalid. My lastfm user name is "sunflowr". Granted I havent yet listened to anything , but shouldnt I at last still have an RSS url?
  • Joe Lazarus · 5 months ago
No, you need to listen to at least 5 artists the prior week in order for the
top 5 artists feed to work. Try waiting till next week after you have
    listened to several bands.
  • jemstarr · 5 months ago
I tried this again and Tumblr still says that it is not a valid feed. The Pipes shows my top five played artists. Last.fm shows them. There is something wrong with the link. My last.fm name is __glitterati. Thanks for the help.
  • Joe Lazarus · 5 months ago
It should work if you copy this exact URL into Tumbr...

    http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.run?_id=cfc13...

If not, it must be a problem on Tumblr's end. Try contacting them. Your
    Yahoo! Pipes feed works fine.
  • lisalovesmaude · 5 months ago
Still not working for me neither. :( Darn, I really wanted to try this out. I even have my top artists there now. Yet STILL saying "invalid feed".

My user name is "sunflowr". What is the WHOLE url for the feed? I notice you trail off when you give people their urls. WHERE does the URL end? Maybe thats where I/we are going wrong.

    Thanks! :)
  • Joe Lazarus · 5 months ago
Your feed is valid. You should be able to see it here:

    http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.run?_id=cfc13...

If Tumblr is telling you it's an invalid feed, the only thing I can think of
is that it's an error on their end. Perhaps you can contact them. It seems
to be working fine for thousands of other people.
  • lisalovesmaude · 5 months ago
Never mind. Finally got it working! I went to the RSS page and copy/pasted the entire URL that was on the address bar. I thought I had done that before. Oh well, works now. :) Hopefully! We'll see no if it imports. Stay tuned...

    Hi Joe,

I installed the "feed" yesterday and today it appears on my tumblog but I just have the title, the 5 top artists don't show up... Do you have an idea what is the problem ?

    Thx Francis
  • Joe Lazarus · 3 months ago
Francis, you need to add the feed as "links with summaries" (see
instructions above). Try to delete the feed and add it again making
    sure to follow that step.

    Hey Joe,

    2. you should put our comments before the notes in your theme =P

    Cheers,

  • Lamarr · 3 months ago
If I recently created a last.fm, say, four days ago, is that why it's telling me that "I have no results"? Because I'm completely positive that I've listened to over 40 artists since then.

  • david · 1 month ago
Hi, Joe. I've tried to add this feature to my Tumblr several times with no luck. After troubleshooting it to the full extent of my abilities, I wonder if you could help me out -

According to Last.fm I've listened to more than 5 artists in the past several days: http://www.last.fm/user/dmaddox1/charts?chartty...

It just started posting the results on the pipe page when I input my Last.fm username (dmaddox1):
    http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.info?_id=cfc1...

But when I insert the RSS url into my Tumblr "Customize" page, it still responds with "not a valid feed."

If you have any input as to why this would be the case, and what I can do to fix the feature, please let me know. Thanks.
  • Joe Lazarus · 1 month ago
Hi David, the feed looks valid from my end...

    http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.run?_id=cfc13...

The only thing I can think to tell you is to try contacting Tumblr or just
wait a while and try again. Sorry for the complications, but everything
seems to be working on this end.

I've installed this several times, and it always works one time but after that one time it seems like the RSS-feed stops working. In stead of having a green colour in the "Services" window of the Customize-page, it turns red and stops showing my weekly artists. Do I need to place the code in every week for it to work? Does anyone else have this problem?

Hey I think this is awesome but it doesn't work for me... I am not sure if I am copying the URL Feed because when I try and put it in my Tumblr it always says that I need to put in the URL feed, is there an example of what the URL feed is supposed to work for, and also when I save it doesn't save the Links with description. Do you know what may be wrong? Thank You :)
  • Boyacense2_0 · 1 month ago
Little help. Is it possible to make it with the songs I heard last week? Thanks man!
  • Joe Lazarus · 1 month ago
That's possible, but unfortunately, I don't have the time to make that
version myself. The Yahoo! Pipes page has a "clone" button, which lets
anyone copy what I made. They could then edit the Pipe to list songs
    instead of artists.
  • eyycaiiit · 3 weeks ago
hi...when i click the get as rss thing, it doesn't give me a url, it just asks whether i want to place the feed in my bookmarks toolbar. how do i get the url to paste in tumblr?
  • Joe Lazarus · 3 weeks ago
Hmmm... it sounds like you have a setting in your browser that automatically
adds RSS to your bookmarks toolbar. Try to right-click on the RSS link and
see if you can copy the URL from there. If that doesn't work, I'm not sure
how to help as it sounds like a personal setting in your web browser.
  • Kurizu · 2 weeks ago
This isn't working for me. I'm not receiving a url when clicking on "get as RSS". I'v checked my last.fm charts which state I'v listening to more than 5 artists last week. Please help. My last.fm user name is pearl35063.
  • Joe Lazarus · 2 weeks ago
That's odd. I'm not sure what the problem is, but it's an issue
either on Last.fm or on Yahoo! Pipes, neither of which I can fix. My
only suggestion is to try again later... in a day or two. Sorry for
    the inconvenience.
